CDM Smith is seeking a Senior Automation Specialist with broad experience in the design and implementation of SCADA systems, controls, and instrumentation in the transportation industries or process industries.
Our continued growth in transportation-related projects has created the need for an individual to support network and SCADA design services for projects related to transportation (light rail, traffic monitoring, highway tolling, central operations centers).
The successful candidate will have excellent communication skills, the ability to successfully lead projects and teams to deliver solutions to our clients’ challenges, strong client relationship skills, and a commitment to professional growth.

As a member of the Chicagoland Automation team, the Senior Automation Engineer will contribute to CDM Smith's mission by: • Creating basic to highly complex SCADA, controls, controls network, cyber security, instrumentation, and related systems designs.
Developing basic technical memoranda related to design issues for clients.
Preparing preliminary design reports (PDRs) under limited supervision identifying design goals and design criteria.
• Leading teams of more junior staff and providing direction and mentoring.
Reviewing the work of junior staff as necessary.
Providing feedback on client relationships and career issues.
• Having the ability to work embedded in a client organization providing on-call engineering or construction services support of network, fiber optic, and SCADA designs for defined periods of time while staying current with ongoing assigned tasks on other projects.
• Participating in the development of proposals and client presentations.
Developing opportunities to expand contracts with existing clients.
• Preparing level of effort estimates (LOEs).
• Providing support to construction services.
Reviewing basic to highly complex component level shop drawings, providing responses to requests for information (RFIs).
Performing field acceptance testing (FATs) and field inspections.
• Implementing or directing the implementation of SCADA system programming and integration deliverables.
Includes programming or specification of human-machine interface (HMI) designs, programmable logic controllers (PLC) software and applications, and definition of automated operational reports.
• Leading the testing and startup team for SCADA, controls, controls network, instrumentation, and related systems independently with minimal supervision.
Responsible for testing and startup documentation completion and quality assurance.
• With limited supervision, developing operations & maintenance manuals for designed SCADA, network, controls instrumentation, and related systems.
Under limited supervision, developing systems training for end users.
Developing training plans for all level of a client's organization.
This role is based in the Chicago Metropolitan area.
It is required for the final candidate to be physically present in the downtown Chicago area for long duration assignments.
This is not a remote-work position although there will be times where remote-work is available.

• 7 years of related experience.
Equivalent additional directly related experience will be considered in lieu of a degree.
Domestic and/or international travel may be required.
The frequency of travel is contingent on specific duties, responsibilities, and the essential functions of the position, which may vary depending on workload and project demands.
Preferred Qualifications • Experience with Transportation and Water/Wastewater Utilities highly preferred.
• Experience within an Engineering and/or construction firm highly preferred.
• Experience leading teams highly preferred.
• Licensed Professional Engineer (Control Systems) in Illinois or ability to obtain license.
Amount of Travel Required 5% Skills and Abilities • Strong knowledge of SCADA, controls, controls networks, instrumentation, and related systems designs.
Fiber Optic network, PLC, and HMI system design experience required.
• Excellent communication and client relations skills.
• Strong knowledge of Microsoft office suite of programs.
• Expert knowledge of 3D and 4D design practices.
